12.05.2011/ KARL STORZ Launches VITOM® System for High-Resolution Visualization during Surgical Procedures

El Segundo, CA (April 27, 2011) – KARLSTORZ Endoscopy-America, Inc., a leader in diagnostic and operative minimally invasive endoscopic technology, is pleased to announce the launch of a new concept in high-resolution visualization during a wide array of open microsurgical procedures, including cardiovascular, spine, small joint applications, pediatric, head and neck, plastic surgery, to name a few. Designed to function as more than a simple surgical tool, the VITOM® System provides enhanced visualization and a better ergonomic working position for surgeons, as well as a useful method of presenting and sharing clinical images during training and education, and a simplified means of documenting procedures.

The VITOM® System combines an exoscope with a high-definition (HD) video camera system developed originally for endoscopic procedures. The system includes a display unit, light source, holding systems and documentation unit. The FULL-HD video components deliver 1080p resolution for exceptional image quality for display and recording, with a wide 16:9 aspect ratio. Surgeons also gain the benefits of large working distance of 25–60 cm above the surgical site, and greater depth of field.

“In terms of comfort and visual quality, the VITOM® System offers advantages over OR-light cameras, loupes, headcams and similar equipment,” says Dr. Georg Weiss, Executive Director Microscopy, KARLSTORZ, Tuttlingen. “And the magnified image delivers excellent visual quality that can be observed from a convenient distance by both surgeon and assistant, as well as by the entire OR team on a FULL HD monitor. This also supports team coordination and overall workflow during the procedure.”

For teaching, training and presentations, residents and students can easily view the surgical field without it being obstructed by the surgeon or assistant. Additionally, the VITOM® System can be introduced easily into the operating field with minimal interference in the procedure. Use of a pneumatic holding device allows quick and easy positioning of the exoscope.

“The VITOM® System aids in documentation of surgical procedures, capturing and recording FULL HD images and video on the KARLSTORZ AIDA® System,” says Dr. Weiss. ”Image and video data from the procedure can be stored on CDs, DVDs, external storage devices or on a network following procedures.”
